Costa Rica boasts some mind-blowing statistics: despite only covering 0.03% of the planet’s surface, it contains around 5% of its biodiversity. In fact, it houses over 500,000 species, with around 15% being endemic!

From unspoiled beaches to ethereal clouds forests, such a disparate range of ecological habitats helps to cultivate wildlife of every different ilk, and there’s nothing more fulfilling than watching animals thriving in their natural habitat.

Mammals

     

Little other than a wonderland for furry friends, the animals of Costa Rica aren’t in short supply. Its mammalian diversity is second to none, and becoming acquainted with the various familiar faces is an exhilarating experience.

One of the most distinctive and famous animals found in Costa Rica is the three-toed sloth: these slow-moving creatures, often found lazing around tree branches, are a favourite among tourists, partly for their cute appearance but also for their comically relatable behaviour.

For those seeking more of a thrill, the elusive Jaguar is a particularly enthralling experience. The charismatic White-faced Capuchin Monkey is another charismatic resident of Costa Rica’s forests, alongside the agile and distinctive Squirrel and Spider monkeys, which can be seen cheekily swinging through the trees.

In the mangrove forests and coastal areas, the American Crocodile can be witnessed lurking along riverbanks and estuaries. In addition, creatures like anteaters, coatis, tapirs and an amalgam of cute and diverse animal species will be some of the many encounters you can have.

Birds

     

A large proportion of Costa Rica’s diversity is constituted by avian life; drawing birdwatchers from all over the world. Not only is there a considerable variety of bird life, but the beauty of these creatures is sure to turn heads – from the vibrant colouration to the unique species, you won’t forget you’re somewhere special.

One of the most iconic birds of Costa Rica is the Scarlet Macaw, a striking parrot species known for its vivid red, blue, and yellow plumage. The Resplendent Quetzal is also difficult to miss; its name lending a clue into its extravagant design. Revered by the ancient Mayans and Aztecs, this magnificent bird is considered one of the most beautiful in the world.

For those who appreciate the comical and endearing, the Keel-billed Toucan is a favourite, as well as the unique species found in the wetlands and coasts such as the striking Roseate Spoonbill, and various heron and egret species.

Sea creatures

      

Situated between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, Costa Rica’s geographical location lends itself to a range of remarkable marine life.

One of the most iconic creatures you can encounter is the magnificent sea turtle. Often nesting along the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, there are frequent opportunities for wildlife enthusiasts to witness their nesting and hatching rituals. Moving beneath the waves lives another varied and colourful ecosystem – the many vibrant coral reefs. Snorkellers and divers are privy to a selection of sights: from parrotfish, angelfish, snappers, to rays, porcupinefish and trevallies!

However, all of which make way for the king of the oceanic jungle… The Cocos Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the Pacific Ocean, is famous for its sharks, including hammerhead sharks, Galapagos sharks, and tiger sharks, but even these formidable creatures pale in size compared to the momentous humpback whale! Amphibians, reptiles & insects

       

Costa Rica is known for its diverse range of frog & toad species, from the iconic red-eyed tree frog, poison dart frogs, golden toad and glass frog – all of which display distinct colourings and patterns to warn off predators while retaining a beautiful flair.

Reptiles aren’t in short supply with the most prominent reptilian residents being the green iguana, often seen sunbathing in trees or along riverbanks, as well as an abundant variety of snakes, most notably the marked eyelash viper and the strikingly coloured coral snake.

When it comes to insects, the rainforests are teeming with life: from its remarkable variety of butterflies, such as the iridescent Blue Morpho to the Malachite, as well as the jewel-like orchid bee and elephant beetle.
