Formerly known as Burma, Myanmar is a fascinating country for getting off the beaten track. Not as well visited as some of its Southeast Asian neighbours, such as Thailand and Laos, it is known for its incredible scenery, vibrant architecture and rich cultural heritage.
Rudyard Kipling famously wrote, “This is Burma, and it will be quite unlike any land you know about.” And with its snow-capped mountains, jungle wilderness, miles of undeveloped coastline and incredibly rich heritage, his words still ring true today.
The lavishly gold-plated Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon and the ruins of the temples of Bagan are wonderful examples of the country’s long and tempestuous history. Mandalay, Inle Lake and the Ayeyarwady River are among Myanmar’s best-known cultural and scenic highlights, from the Intha people’s distinctive technique of leg rowing to the ancient temples and landscapes of central Myanmar.
Whether you’re drawn by its mountain landscapes, local markets, historic cities or cultural heritage, Myanmar has much to discover.
We are loving Myanmar, perhaps particularly because of the warm and welcoming people. There is always a smile, a handshake, a wave, an exchange of some kind… Thanks for all that you did to make this trip possible!
