The Mesmerising Glow of Bioluminescent Beaches

Toyama Bay (Japan)

A picturesque expanse of water on the Sea of Japan coast of Honshu – by day, Toyama Bay is renowned and admired for its beautiful blue waves and incredible backdrop of dramatic, snow-capped cliffs. By night, it’s a glowing spectacle of blue-hued wonder.

During their annual migration – typically occurring from March to June – the endemic Firefly Squid wash ashore to mate and lay their eggs while simultaneously producing a mesmerising light show. This luminescent glow is created using a chemical reaction between cells known as ‘photophores’ and oxygen – when they come into contact, the light is produced.

This species can manually control the output of their light, and it serves various evolutionary purposes: aiding communication, attracting mates, perplexing predators and providing a much needed light source in the deep, dark depths of the ocean. Regardless of the egghead-ery, the resultant sight is one of incredible beauty.

Jervis Bay (Australia)

A vast and idyllic coastal region known for its abundant marine life, Jervis Bay is a popular destination for both domestic and international tourists. The bay is surrounded by Jervis Bay National Park and Booderee National Park, which protect its bountiful ecosystems and provide habitats for its native species – on a timely visit one can witness dolphins, seals, penguins, and whales during their migration seasons.

Like Toyama Bay, its blue glow is a mesmerising and sought-after sight; however, its source differs. While the aforementioned location is illuminated by Firefly Squids arising on the shore, the light show of Jervis Bay is produced by a species of marine plankton called Noctiluca scintillans, commonly known as sea sparkle or marine fireflies – meaning you can dip your hand in and caress the shimmering waves.

Unlike other displays of bioluminescence, the sea sparkle of Jervis Bay is unpredictable with varying intensity – adding a sense of mystery and wonder to the visitors’ anticipation. The best time to witness this wonder is on moonless nights which enhance the visibility of the glow, and many tourists use this opportunity to swim and kayak along the scintillating waters.

Koh Rong (Cambodia)

A sequestered island paradise located off the coast of Sihanoukville, Cambodia, this region is known for its verdant jungles and paradisiacal beaches carved around its circumference. The island offers a wealth of attractions –  from hidden waterfalls, opportunities for snorkelling and diving, to jungle exploration and much more!

As darkness falls, its blue/green glow arises – similar to Jervis Bay, this phenomenon is also the product of marine plankton known as sea sparkle, and its inherent beauty wonderfully enhances the magic of the beach.

Mudhdhoo Island is part of the Baa Atoll in the Maldives, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The region is exemplified by the beauty that characterises the Maldives: turquoise blue waters, paradisiacal sand beaches, and abundant marine life.
