This 18-day journey combines Japan’s great cultural cities, mountain scenery and island calm, travelling from Tokyo to Okinawa through some of the country’s most rewarding stops. Begin among Tokyo’s temples, towers and lively neighbourhoods, unwind in Hakone’s hot springs, explore Takayama and Kanazawa, then continue to Kyoto, Hiroshima and Miyajima for gardens, shrines and deeply significant history. The trip ends with Osaka’s food scene and three relaxed nights by the sea in Okinawa.

Day 1: Arrive in Tokyo

Arrive in Japan’s capital, Tokyo, where you will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel in the city.

Day 2: Tokyo Orientation and Sumo Experience

Join a private guide for a half-day orientation tour of Tokyo, including guidance on using IC cards, navigating the train and subway systems, and understanding the etiquette of shrines and temples. Later, enjoy a sumo demonstration with two former wrestlers and sit down to a traditional chanko nabe lunch.

Day 3: Tokyo Full Day Tour

Spend the day visiting Tokyo’s major sights, including the Imperial Palace, Senso-ji Temple, Tokyo Skytree and a cruise on Tokyo Bay. The tour also passes through areas such as Harajuku, Akihabara, Ueno and Kappabashi, with an izakaya-style lunch included.

Day 4: Tokyo to Hakone, Self-Guided

Travel by rail to Hakone, a mountain region known for hot springs, Lake Ashi and views of Mount Fuji when the weather is clear. Use your Hakone Free Pass to explore independently by mountain railway, cable car, ropeway, lake ship and local bus before settling into your traditional ryokan.

Day 5: Hakone to Takayama

Travel from Hakone to Takayama via Odawara and Nagoya, using the Shinkansen and Limited Express services. On arrival, enjoy free time to explore Takayama, with the option to visit Hida no Sato, an open-air folk village with traditional houses from the Hida region.

Day 6: Hida-Furukawa Cycling Tour

Take a shared cycling tour through Hida-Furukawa, a countryside town close to Takayama. Ride past traditional houses, rice fields and rural scenery, with the chance to meet local people, try regional food and see a quieter side of Japan.

Day 7: Takayama Food Walk and Kanazawa

Start the day with a guided food walk through Takayama, sampling local food and sake while learning about the town’s culinary traditions and preserved old streets. Afterwards, travel by shared coach to Kanazawa, stopping at Shirakawago for self-guided sightseeing along the way.

Day 8: Kanazawa Tour and Leisure

Explore Kanazawa on a shared food and culture tour, beginning at Omicho Market before visiting Kazuemachi Chayagai and the Higashi Chaya District. The afternoon is at leisure, with time to visit Kenrokuen Garden or wander through the Old Samurai District.

Day 9: Kanazawa to Kyoto

Travel by rail from Kanazawa to Kyoto. The rest of the day is free to explore, with Fushimi Inari Shrine an easy independent visit from Kyoto Station.

Day 10: Kyoto Full Day Tour

Join a full-day tour of Kyoto, visiting some of the city’s best-known sights, including Kiyomizudera, Sanjusangendo, Fushimi Inari Shrine, Arashiyama’s bamboo groves, Tenryuji Garden and the Golden Pavilion. A Japanese-style lunch is included.

Day 11: Private Nara Tour from Kyoto

Meet your private guide and travel to Nara, Japan’s first permanent capital. Visit Todaiji Temple, home to a vast bronze Buddha, continue to Kasuga Taisha Shrine, and walk through Nara Park, where the city’s famous deer roam freely.

Day 12: Kyoto to Hiroshima

Travel by Shinkansen to Hiroshima. The rest of the day is free, with the option to visit Hijiyama Park, the contemporary art museum or the city’s riverside areas at your own pace.

Day 13: Hiroshima and Miyajima, Travel to Osaka

Take a private full-day tour of Hiroshima and Miyajima. Visit Peace Memorial Park and the Peace Memorial Museum before travelling by train and ferry to Miyajima Island, known for Itsukushima Shrine, its famous torii gate, wandering deer, temples and local food. Afterwards, continue by rail to Osaka.

Day 14: Osaka Food Tour

Enjoy a free morning in Osaka, with time to visit sights such as Osaka Castle, Umeda Sky Building or Dotonbori. In the afternoon, join a Tenma food tour, sampling local favourites such as takoyaki, taiyaki, dango, melon bread, croquettes and other street food specialities.

Day 15: Osaka to Okinawa

Transfer to the airport for your domestic flight to Okinawa. On arrival in Naha, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Onna for three nights by the coast.

Day 16 & 17: Okinawa at Leisure

Spend two days at leisure in Okinawa. Relax at the hotel, explore the island independently, visit beaches, or arrange optional activities such as snorkelling, diving or local cultural visits.

Day 18: Depart Okinawa

Transfer to the airport for your onward flight and return journey home.
