Trek the Red Ape Trail in Sarawak

If you’re looking for adventure, this 10-night expedition through Borneo’s unspoilt rainforests is the perfect getaway. Stay with an indigenous tribe in a traditional longhouse, join the Iban people on a Red Ape Hike through orangutan country, explore the Bako National Park and visit the Semenggoh Rehabiltiation Centre. You’ll have a chance to marvel at the vastness of the caves in Mulu, go in search of the Irrawaddy Dolphin around Santang Island and hopefully see the turtles in Talang-Satang National Park. No trip to Borneo is complete without seeing orangutans, sun bears, gibbons, hornbills, proboscis monkeys, macaques and more. Throw in beautiful secluded beaches, animal sanctuaries and a bat exodus and you have an incredible Borneo adventure to experience.

Day 1: Departure

Depart UK on the overnight Malaysia Airlines flight to Kuala Lumpur

Day 2: Arrive Kuching

Connect to Kuching, where you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Visit the Semenggoh Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre or take a sunset cruise.

Day 3: Kuching Day Trip (B, L)

Sail over to Santang Island in search of the Irrawaddy Dolphin and nesting turtles. Visit the hatchery and learn more about the work being done to protect the Green and Hawksbill turtles. Enjoy a swim and investigate the corals and marine life, or simply soak up the sun on the white sand beaches.

Day 4: Bako National Park (B,L)

Keep your eyes peeled for the proboscis monkey, long-tailed macaques, monitor lizards and birds as you head into the Bako National Park in Sarawak. Explore the hiking trails or take to the sea for some snorkelling.

Day 5: Nanga Sampa Lodge (B,L,D)

Travel through to pepper gardens, cocoa and rubber plantations as you head to Batang Ai Lake. Explore the market stalls of Lachau Bazaar before boarding a longboat to take you upriver to Nanga Sumpa Longhouse, home to 33 Iban families. Learn about their culture and way of life as they invite you to share their home.

Day 6: Naga Sampa – Genting Tunu (B,L,D)

A 4 hour trek today takes you through orangutan country. Keep your eyes peeled for their tree top nests.

Day 7: Genting Tunu – Sungai Mawang (B,L,D)

Today you have a 5 hour trek from Genting Tunu to Sungwai Mawang to your jungle camp. Relax in the afternoon or explore the forest trails in search of wildlife.

Day 8: Sungai Mawang – Nanga Sampa (B,L,D)

A shorter trek today takes you back to Nanga Sumpa with lunch along the Delok River. An afternoon hike takes you through primary and secondary rainforest and you have the option to travel upriver to the Enseluai Waterfall for a refreshing swim.

Day 9: Nanga Sampa – Kuching (B,L)

Enjoy the morning at leisure before returning to Kuching in the early evening.

Day 10: Mulu Deer & Lang Cave (B,L,D)

Fly to Mulu to visit Deer Cave, the world’s largest cave entrance. You could fit St Paul’s Cathedral under the archway! At sundown watch as around 2 million bats exit the cave in search of food. Option to visit the world’s longest tree-based canopy skywalk – book in advance.

Day 11: Wind & Clearwater Cave (B,L,D)

Visit the Wind and Clearwater Caves: home to impressive stalactites and stalagmites, rare species of orchids and photo-sensitive algae with needle-like formations reaching for the light.

Day 12: Departure (B)

Return to Kuching for your flight home. Speak to us if you would like to add a beach extension.
