Visit the best of Sabah and Sarawak on this adventurous trip through Borneo’s jungles, rivers, culture and beaches.
This wonderful trip visits both Sarawak and Sabah, starting with a journey into the Kinabatangan River region in Sabah – the best place to spot Proboscis Monkeys, Pygmy Elephants, the Hornbill and even wild Orangutans. Visit the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, the Sun Bear Rehabilitation Centre and the Rainforest Discovery Centre.
In Sarawak, spend time exploring and hiking through Bako National Park, one of the oldest national parks in Borneo with a diverse landscape ranging from tropical rainforest, mangroves, tropical swamp and beach vegetation.
Visit a traditional Longhouse and spend time with the local Iban people, learn about their culture, experience how they live and enjoy some local rice wine. A perfect blend of culture, wildlife and discovery awaits!
Day 1: Departure.
Depart the UK on an overnight flight to Kuala Lumpur.
Day 2: Arrive Borneo.
Transit and continue to Borneo. On arrival at Sandakan Airport, you will be met and transferred to your hotel for an overnight stay.
Day 3: Sandakan – Kinabatangan River – Abai (B.L.D)
Take a boat cruise down the Kinabatangan River to Abai. After lunch, cruise upriver to search for the local wildlife and in the evening watch the beautiful fire flies glowing in the dark.
Day 4: Pitas Lake – Abai Village (B,L,D)
Take an early morning river cruise to Pitas Lake observing the early rising animals and birds. After breakfast, take part in the tree planting project followed by an optional lunch with the local Abai villagers.
Day 5: Abai – Kinabatangan River – Sandakan – Sepilok (B,L)
Return to Sandakan and visit the Central Market for a spot of souvenir shopping before heading to the Sepilok Nature Resort. Arrive in time to watch the afternoon feeding of the orangutans and you may opt to return for a night time canopy walk to see a different side of this protected forest.
Day 6: Sepilok Nature Reserve (B)
Day at leisure. You may wish to return to the Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre or visit the Rainforest Discovery Centre or Sun Bear Conservation Centre where you can see the world’s smallest bears which are also now under threat.
Day 7: Sepilok – Kota Kinabalu – Kuching (B)
Fly to Kuching in Sarawak via Kota Kinabalu. On arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in the city. Kuching is a wonderful city to explore by foot and a culinary highlight of Borneo!
Day 8: Kuching Tour – by bicycle and river boat (B)
Discover the hidden gems of Kuching on a guided bicycle tour. See the temples and monuments through the hidden lanes inside the heritage zone and indulge in a wide variety of popular authentic Sarawak local street foods, drinks and desserts.
In the late afternoon, board a river boat and cruise the Santubong River to search for irrawaddy dolphins, proboscis monkeys, fireflies and crocodiles.
Day 9: Bako National Park (B,L)
Take a day trip to Bako National Park, one of the best places in Sarawak to see wildlife in their natural surroundings. This popular tour gives you a brief taster of the wonders of Sarawak and introduces you to Long-Tail Macaques, monitor lizards and a wide variety of birds as well as the Proboscis Monkeys.
Day 10: Nanga Sampa Lodge (B,L,D)
Travel inland to the Batang Ai reservoir passing pepper gardens, cocoa and rubber plantations to get to the jungles and rivers of Nanga Sumpa. Visit a traditional Longhouse, spend time with the locals and learn about their culture and sample some of the local rice wine.
Day 11: Nanga Sampa Lodge (B,L,D)
Spend another day in the heart of the jungle – this is authentic Borneo at it’s wildest.
Day 12: Kuching (B)
Return to the city for your flight home, on onwards to another adventure.
