Pretoria to Victoria Falls

Day 1: Pretoria

Depart Pretoria and settle into life on board as the train heads north through Bela-Bela and Modimolle, passing the escarpment as the Highveld begins to fall away. It is a gentle opening to the journey, giving time to unwind into the slower rhythm of rail travel before the border crossing ahead.

Day 2: On Board

Spend the day at leisure on the train as the route crosses the Tropic of Capricorn, reaches the Limpopo and continues into Zimbabwe. The landscape gradually shifts towards baobab country, with long hours to enjoy the lounge, observation car and the unhurried appeal of the journey itself.

Day 3: Matobo National Park

Today brings the first off-train excursion, with a visit into Matobo National Park. This adds a more historic and geological dimension to the journey, with bushmen caves, rock art and the grave of Cecil John Rhodes set among one of Zimbabwe’s most distinctive landscapes.

Day 4: Hwange National Park

Travel onwards along the eastern edge of Hwange before heading out on a game drive in Zimbabwe’s largest wildlife area. After the long, scenic build-up of the previous days, this brings a more overt safari element to the journey before the final run north.

Day 5: Victoria Falls

Arrive at Victoria Falls, where the journey comes to an end in one of Africa’s most celebrated settings. After days spent watching the landscape unfold from the train, it is a suitably dramatic finale.
