Deserts and Valleys of Morocco
£1,998.00
Trace a classic route through southern Morocco, beginning in Marrakesh before heading across the High Atlas to Ouarzazate, Zagora, Merzouga and the Todgha Gorge. This 7-day journey combines imperial-city atmosphere with palm-filled valleys, pre-Saharan landscapes and a night among the dunes, finishing back in Marrakesh after some of the country’s most cinematic desert scenery. Along the way, souks, kasbahs, mountain passes and a memorable cooking experience give the itinerary both variety and character.
Day 1: Marrakesh
Arrive in Marrakesh and transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is left free, giving you time to settle in and ease into the rhythm of the city before the journey begins in earnest.
Day 2: Marrakesh
Spend the day exploring Marrakesh, one of Morocco’s great imperial cities, with its gardens, historic monuments and lively old quarters. A cooking class with Amal adds a more personal side to the day, offering insight into Moroccan cuisine and culture before time in the souks and around Djemaa El Fna.
Day 3: Marrakesh – Ouarzazate – Zagora
Leave Marrakesh and cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, then continue south through Ouarzazate and on towards Zagora. The scenery shifts steadily as the route moves through mountain country, the Anti-Atlas and the Draa Valley, where palm groves and kasbahs line the landscape.
Day 4: Zagora – Erfoud – Merzouga
Continue east through Morocco’s pre-Saharan landscapes, with a stop at Tamegroute and its famous old library, before travelling on through Berber villages towards Erfoud and Merzouga. The day ends in classic desert fashion with a sunset camel ride across the dunes, followed by a night in the Sahara.
Day 5: Merzouga – Erfoud – Tinghir – Ouarzazate
After breakfast, leave the desert behind and travel back through Erfoud towards Tinghir. Here, the Todgha Gorge provides one of the route’s great natural contrasts, with sheer canyon walls rising above the riverbed, before the journey continues along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs to Ouarzazate.
Day 6: Ouarzazate – Marrakesh
This morning includes time at Ait Benhaddou, one of southern Morocco’s most striking fortified kasbahs and a long-standing film location, before returning towards Marrakesh. A visit to Kasbah Taourirt adds another architectural highlight on the way back to the city.
Day 7: Marrakesh
After breakfast, transfer to Marrakesh airport for your departure flight.
