Why Canada should be your next getaway!

“The Great White North” is a frequent guest on ‘Top 10’ destination lists, and it’s easy to see why: home to 16 UNESCO World Heritage sites, abundant wildlife, gorgeous natural scenery, the Northern Lights, and even the deliciously carb-heavy poutine!

What often goes overlooked is the sheer size of Canada – spanning over 9 million km2 and comprising 6 time zones, it takes the crown of the second-largest country in the world! So it’s no surprise there’s such a plethora of incredible sights and wildlife, with opportunities to witness bald eagles, black bears, grizzlies and even dolphins!

Canada is currently experiencing a resurgence of tourism – many international travellers adjourn to experience the verdant forests, cosmopolitan cities and even the famous warmth of its people, so without further ado, here are some of the most compelling reasons to get “oot and aboot” in Canada!

Wildlife

While Canada isn’t always lauded for its biodiversity, there are some very unique and riveting animal-spotting experiences to be had in the Great White North. Nothing will prepare you for seeing a grizzly bear in its natural habitat…

Not only is it home to grizzly bears, but even the fearsome polar bear is a reoccurring resident in Canada’s arctic. There’s also a high chance you’ll encounter moose, bison, elk or even Canada’s resident carpenter, the beaver.

In the summer, there will be extraordinary opportunities to witness whales splash up over the surface from deep beyond, as well as the potential to see orcas, porpoises, seals and sea lions!

Nature

The diversity of landscapes you’ll find in Canada is second to none. Aided by its impressive size, you’ll find scenic coastlines, majestic mountains, sprawling prairies and gargantuan forests.

Canada is home to a plethora of impressive national parks – with over 40 in total, some consisting of temperate rainforests and others Arctic tundra, as well as being home to some of the world’s most striking landscapes: Niagra Falls, Banff National Park and the Rockies.

Last not certainly not least are the beautiful yet evanescent Northern Lights – perceptible from the Yukon province, this phenomenon is one of the most magical natural sights: spectral lights dancing in sinuous shapes across the sky. For those determined to catch one, there’s even an Aurora forecast one can follow.

Activities

While Canada may be the second largest landmass on the planet, the population is relatively small (housing 9x fewer people than the United States). All this space and natural scenery means there’s more than enough space for outdoor activities!

Whatever it is you want to do or explore, there’s probably an opportunity to do it, all the while admiring a gorgeous mountainous backdrop. Some of the most popular pastimes include camping, skiing, snowboarding, golfing, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, climbing, kayaking, and canoeing.

Culture

Home to many modern and multicultural cities, from the postcard pretty Vancouver to the diverse and bustling Toronto, they all have a distinct character and appeal that highlight the various facets of the country.

Even in the busy metropolises the locals never stoop below their characteristic politeness and decency – in fact, a study back in 2016 found that Canadians were the world’s friendliest people!

Moreover, Canada takes its food seriously. While there are nations more strongly associated with culinary flair, the dining scene in Canada is vibrant with many restaurants and cafes offering farm-to-table cuisine, and one cannot fail to mention poutine, Canada’s signature dish…

The loaded dish includes chips drowned in thick gravy and topped with cheese curds or cheese sauce.

That’s only scratching the surface of Canada’s richness – if you’d like to design a personalised itinerary, email us at enquiries@odyssey-world.co.uk or give us a call!
