Ethiopia Northern Historic Route

Day 1: Addis Ababa – Axum

Arrive in Addis Ababa and connect onward to Axum, one of Ethiopia’s most historically charged cities. Begin with Axum’s core sites, including the Archaeological Museum, the stelae field and the royal tombs, then continue to the Bath of the Queen of Sheba and St Mary of Zion Cathedral, traditionally linked to the Ark of the Covenant. It’s a full first day, but a rewarding one, with the main landmarks close together and easy to absorb with a guide. Overnight at Atranos Hotel (Bed and Breakfast).

Day 2: Axum – Bahir Dar

Travel to Bahir Dar, gateway to Lake Tana and a softer, greener landscape. Visit the Blue Nile Falls, known locally as Tis Isat, where the river breaks into spray and sound before continuing west. Return to Bahir Dar for a relaxed evening by the lake, with time to reset before the monastery visits tomorrow. Overnight at Avanti Blue Nile Resort (Bed and Breakfast).

Day 3: Bahir Dar – Lake Tana – Gorgora

Boat excursion on Lake Tana to visit monasteries on the Zege Peninsula, then continue to Dek Island to see Narga Selassie church. These lake crossings are a highlight in themselves, with wide water horizons, birdlife, and the sense of moving between isolated religious sites that have sat quietly here for centuries. Cross to Gorgora for the night. Overnight at Gorgora Eco Resort (Bed and Breakfast)

Day 4: Gorgora – Gondar

Visit Debre Sina Mariam church, then drive to Gondar, the former imperial capital. Explore the Royal Enclosure, where castles and courtyards give Gondar its nickname, then continue to Debre Birehan Selassie church, famed for its interior paintings, and Fasilides’ Bath, associated with Timket celebrations. It’s a day of layered history, with distinct sites that feel meaningfully different from one another. Overnight at Gondar Hills Resort (Bed and Breakfast).

Day 5: Gondar – Simien Mountains National Park

Drive into Simien Mountains National Park and begin a trek from Chequanit to Sankaber. The scenery shifts quickly from cultivated highlands to dramatic escarpments and open views, with strong chances to see gelada baboons along the way. The walk is designed to be achievable rather than punishing, and the payoff is classic Simien atmosphere: big skies, sharp contours, and wildlife that keeps appearing at the edges of the trail. Overnight at Simien Lodge (Bed and Breakfast).

Day 6: Simien Mountains – Gondar – Lalibela

Return to Gondar and continue onward to Lalibela. Later, begin your first set of Lalibela’s rock-hewn churches, including Bete Medhane Alem and Bete Maryam, then visit Bete Giorgis, the most recognisable of the complex, carved with striking precision from living rock. This is where Ethiopia’s heritage becomes tangible, not just described, and you can feel the craft in the stonework at close range. Overnight at Mezena Lodge (Bed and Breakfast).

Day 7: Lalibela

Visit Yimrehane Kirstos, then continue to the second group of Lalibela churches including Bete Emanuel and Bete Gabriel-Rufa’el. Expect narrow passages, stepped entrances, and a rhythm of spaces that rewards taking your time, especially with a guide who can keep the story straight across multiple sites. The day rounds out the Lalibela experience properly, rather than treating it as a quick photo stop. Overnight at Mezena Lodge (Bed and Breakfast).

Day 8: Lalibela – Addis Ababa

Return to Addis Ababa and visit the National Museum, with time for shopping. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner with cultural dance before your onward transfer. It’s a calm finish after the northern circuit, with enough structure to feel complete but not so much that it becomes another marathon day.
