Explore Vietnam’s cultural and scenic highlights as you take in the whole country from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. This fascinating holiday/tour of Vietnam takes in the most wonderful aspects of the country. Your experience includes Hanoi with its French colonial charm, hillside Sapa and the minority hilltribe communities, majestic Halong Bay with its impressive limestone karst formations and the UNESCO registered old merchant town of Hoi An. Not forgetting your final visit to historical Ho Chi Minh City and the famous Cu Chi Tunnels – this holiday cannot fail to leave you wanting to return.
Day 1: Departure
Depart London Heathrow on a direct flight to Hanoi
Day 2: Arrive Hanoi (B)
On arrival in Hanoi you will be met and transferred to your hotel in the heart of the city. You'll then have plenty of time to relax after your flight and make use of the hotels luxurious facilities. In the evening, you will attend a performance of the famous Vietnamese traditional art of water puppetry. The stage is actually a large container of water where the characters (carved wooden puppets) 'act' out the story.
Day 3: Hanoi City Tour (B)
This morning visit the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and his former residence and the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first university. Also visit the Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure for you to wander the streets of the city and explore.
Day 4: Mai Chau (B/L/D)
Enjoy a scenic 4-hour bus ride to Pom Coong, an indigenous Thai village in the Mau Chau Valley. You'll have lunch in the village followed by a gentle walk to the neighbouring village of Xo before checking into your lodge. The lodge offers wonderful facilities and a full range of exciting activities, from swimming to kayaking, to cycling and rock climbing. Those interested in learning about local culture can watch and join in with traditional dance performances and watch the locals spin silk and weave it into spectacular patterns.
Day 5: Overnight train to Sapa (B/L)
After breakfast you are welcome to join a two hour cycling tour or walking trek through the beautiful valley of Mai Chau. You will meet the local hill tribes going about their daily routines such as planting rice, herding buffalos or building traditional houses. You will then leave for Hanoi after lunch where you will take the overnight sleeper train to Lao Cai in the northern Sapa region. Overnight on board the train.
Day 6: Lao Cai - Sapa (B/D)
You will arrive into Lao Cai station early this morning and your guide will be waiting to take you to your hotel for early check-in. Once you are refreshed, it is time to explore the valleys of Sapa with a trek that takes you through picturesque mountain scenery. Visit the Tay people of Ban Ho village with their houses built on stilts before enjoying lunch in a local home. You will then return to your hotel. (Note: this trek requires a good level of fitness with approximately 5 hours walking and 1 hour for lunch)
Day 7: Sapa (B/L)
Today is at leisure. As well as excellent trekking opportunities, there is also a good range of local markets in the region which can be a great place to see the local tribes-people trading goods, having a drink with friends and catching up on the local gossip!
Day 8: Sapa (B, L)
Another day at leisure before being driven back to Lao Cai station to take the overnight train back to Hanoi. Overnight on board.
Day 9: Halong Bay (B/L/D)
Your guide will meet you in Hanoi and transfer you to Halong Bay for your overnight on a traditional junk boat. Board the boat and set sail through the bay while your buffet lunch is served. Enjoy an Asian Buffet lunch as the vessel sails to Halong Bay passing the Fighting Cocks Islet, the Elephant Leg Islet, the Castle Islet and Soi Sim Island. This afternoon enjoy a range of activities on board before enjoying a cocktail at the open air bar located on the sundeck before your 5 course dinner. Overnight onboard Paradise Cruise.
Day 10: Halong Bay (B/L)
This morning you have the option to wake early to join in the tai chi lesson on the back sundeck before your buffet breakfast. Take a tender to Surprise Cave, an enormous cavern with a deceptive entrance. In the afternoon you will be transferred back to Hanoi to catch the overnight train to Hue.
Day 11: Hue (B)
Arrive into Hue. Meet on arrival and transfer to your hotel and the rest of the day is at your leisure to enjoy your hotel and surrounding area.
Day 12: Hue / Da Nang / Hoi An (B)
This morning take a boat trip on the Perfume River to visit the Thien Mu Pagoda. Then depart for Danang via the scenic Hai Van pass offering spectacular views of mountains, idyllic beaches and villages. Continue further south to the charming historic city of Hoi An, transfer to your hotel.
Days 13 – 14: Hoi An at leisure (B)
Days at leisure to relax and enjoy the Resort and the region. Enjoy a bicycle tour (or walk) into the heart of rural Hoi An to see the farming community in action.
Day 15: Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)(B)
Fly to Ho Chi Minh City this morning. On arrival you will visit the Cu Chi Tunnels (70km northwest of Ho Chi Minh City), an amazing complex of underground tunnels used during the Vietnam War. After your visit, you will be transferred to your hotel and the rest of the day is at your leisure to explore the city.
Day 16: Departure (B)
Enjoy the day at leisure until your flight back to the UK.
