Today you will learn about the intricacies of typical Sri Lankan village lifestyles and culture whilst making a meaningful contribution to the community that you visit.

Tamarind Gardens is a community based project with ‘Sustainability’ at its core. Its existence and all the activities which surround the property have been designed in order to bring economic benefit to a community which struggles daily with a very harsh environment.

Upon arrival you will be greeted by Ayesha and Nalin the passionate couple behind the project who will enthusiastically share all their stories and experiences over the years and will be glad to answer any questions over a cup of tea.

After a brief tour of the estate take a guided walk (which will last approximately one hour) to explore the village to meet interesting local people and learn about their way of life. Visit the home of a jewellery maker who handcrafts delicate Kandyan jewellery and watch as he fashions individual pieces from sheets of copper and semi-precious stones.

Continue walking through the village, past a kindergarten and make a final stop at the home of a lady who runs an Incense making cottage industry with a group of local women.

Experience the entire process, starting with the melting of the various resins together with specific oils, the preparation of the incense mixture together with ash and exotic scents and finally the lady will allow you the opportunity to get your hands dirty and actually prepare your own incense sticks! Take away a pack of home-made incense sticks… an exotic reminder of your Sri Lankan adventure.

Thereafter you can get involved in the preparation of an authentic Sri Lankan meal which you will enjoy for lunch.

After lunch bid farewell to your hosts and depart for Kandy.

Nuwara Eliya – Sri Lanka's premier hill resort with a fine bracing mountain climate, Nuwara Eliya is also the heart of Sri Lanka's tea country, producing some of the world’s best tea. The mountain slopes and valleys are a carpet of velvety green tea plantations, interspersed with gushing streams and tumbling waterfalls.

Red or green roofed plantation bungalows, English country style homes and hotels with lovely flower gardens, a fine 18 hole golf course and a racecourse gives Nuwara Eliya a decidedly British character.

Its open undulating terrain made it famous for elephants for many years, but recently the park has also received much fame through publicity by National Geographic and the Discovery TV channels, which focused on a leopard research/conservation and identification project.

Claims have subsequently been made that Yala National Park has the world’s highest concentration of leopard per square kilometre. Vegetation is primarily grassland and shrub jungle with patches of dense growth while several salt and fresh water lagoons are a haven for a large variety of resident and migrant birds.

Areas popular with leopard are rock strewn hillocks with dense shrub in which the animals hide.
