This 9 day safari takes place on horseback as you set out to discover the freedom of riding in the vast plains of Africa. Camp in the bush, seek out zebras, giraffes, hippos and white rhino and take part in fun mounted games which will test your horsemanship but make great family memories.
Day 1: Arrive South Africa (L,D)
Arrive in Johannesburg where you will be met and transferred to the lodge in time for lunch. Your lodge is beautifully located alongside a large lake within the estate’s dedicated game reserve. After a delicious lunch it is time to meet your mount for the week. Horses are at the very heart of the estate, and each one has been carefully picked and nurtured over the years. Whether you’re a confident rider looking to challenge yourself or want a horse who will give you confidence, you can be certain that you’ll be matched with a horse which suits your experience. All you will need to worry about is spotting the many game species on the reserve. Keep an eye out for zebra, giraffe, kudu, impala, eland, hartebeest, waterbuck, hippo, the very funny warthog and other small antelope… just a flavour of what’s in store for the rest of your holiday. Your first day finishes watching the sunset from a rocky outcrop.
Day 2: Working the ranch (B,L,D)
This morning you can choose your ride – the adventurous can try their hands at being a cowboy (or girl) mustering the cattle. Or for the more sedate, take a leisurely amble across the range to the historic homestead and meet the farms’ children. In the afternoon, you’ll hack out to the hippo pools to see what you can spot.
Day 3: Family fun (B,L,D)
Try your hand at polocrosse today – a fun, addictive mix of polo and lacrosse and a wonderful way to involve the whole family. After a competitive (and hilarious) few hours, take your horse to the nearby dam where you can both cool off with a swim together. In the afternoon, you will trek across to Beadle, a farm community and shop where locals make exquisite beaded leather goods. You’re certain to be tempted by the made-to-measure leather chaps.
Day 4 & 5: Wilderness Safari (B,L,D)
After your sumptuous breakfast, you’ll set out on a two day safari in search of a wide variety of game. Explore the bush, discover the wildlife, and set up camp along the bank of the Melk River. Away from modern amenities, this is a wonderful time to simply relax together as a family.
The following morning, breakfast will be cooked over a camp fire before saddling up to explore. Hopefully you’ll see some of the many antelope, giraffe and white rhino which call the bush their home. After a picnic lunch and a refreshing dip in the river, you’ll head back to camp before sunset.
Day 6: Game drive (B,L,D)
A day out of the saddle will be a welcome break if you’re feeling a little sore today. So take up the option of a morning game drive to one of the nearby Big 5 Reserves. In the afternoon, it is back in the saddle for a session of Western games – pole bending, barrel racing and the water carrying race is sure to test the whole family’s riding abilities.
Day 7: Family Fun Day (B,L,D)
Everyone’s talents are needed for a challenging bush game of ‘EQ’ - orienteering, river crossing, target shooting – all this and more. In the afternoon, you can choose a fast ride along some of the ranch’s sandy tracks or a tranquil wilderness ride.
Day 8: Return to the Lodge (B,L,D)
Decipher the clues on a mounted treasure hunt and you’ll be rewarded with a champagne breakfast in the bush. This is followed by a short ride back to the lodge and another chance to swim in the dam with your horse. In the afternoon, make the most of your final ride out to the plain for your last few photographs of the incredible wildlife .
Day 9: Departure Day (B)
After a wonderful week of riding, you can choose your favourite ride to repeat for the last time while you say goodbye to the horse you have shared your week with. After lunch you will depart back to Johannesburg for your onward journey.
