This 16-day tour is an unmissable introduction to Bali, the "island of the gods." Its outstanding natural beauty and relaxed way of life makes it an ideal destination for holidays, but its ancient culture, beautiful temple complexes and welcoming people add a wonderful extra dimension.
Escape from the well-walked path of large chain hotels and instead venture into the heart of the country. Here you will meet the locals, try your hand at cooking, discover their ancient farming practices and explore the stunningly beautiful temple complexes that dot the island. Get up early and swim with dolphins and watch as the sun rises over the island from the summit of Mount Batur, an extinct volcano.
Along the way you will be escorted by an experienced, local English speaking guide who will teach you about their country. And of course, you'll have five wonderful days to relax at the end of your trip and soak up Bali's wonderful ambiance. Bali on a shoestring shows you the best of the country at an unbeatable price.
Day 1: Start Exploring Bali (B)
Famous for its fresh fruits and exotic spices, Bali has a treasure trove of markets to discover. First stop is Candy Kuning, explore the laden-down stalls before continuing to three beautiful volcanic lakes, Beratan, Buyan and Tamblingan. Visit the beautiful Ulun Danu temple sitting on a small outcrop within the calm waters of Lake Beratan and trek through lush tropical rainforest, enjoying the mountain air and beautiful views, and row back across the water in a dug-out canoe.
Day 2: Lovina (B)
During a vist to Brahmavihara-Arama, Bali’s largest Buddhist monastery, you'll have a chance to explore its meditation halls, libraries and beautiful landscaped gardens before relaxing in the soothing hot springs at Banjar. Believed to have healing properties and nourishing effects, people travel from all over the island to experience the naturally hot waters. Finish your second day with a visit to Singaraja, which with its colonial echoes of the past and wide, grand streets has a different feel to anywhere else in Bali. End your day in Lovina.
Day 3: Subak Guliang (B, L, D)
A very early start takes you out into the Indian Ocean to spot dolphins as they hunt for tuna. Learn more about Bali's rural lfe of rice growing at a farm in Subak Guliang and enjoy a refreshing taste of the local speciality, coconut water. Spend the night in a unique family home and enjoy dinner in a community run restaurant overlooking the sweeping rice paddies.
Day 4: Climb Mount Batur (B, L)
Your early start is reqarded with an invigorating trek to the summit of Mount Batur to watch as the sun rises over the island. Enjoy breakfast on top of the world before making your descent past three younger volvanic craters. A relaxing soak in Toya Bungkah hot springs will rejuvenate tired muscles before heading to the coastal resort of Manggis.
Day 5: Cooking Class (B, L)
Alila's beautiful organic garden growsin the shadow of Mount Agung and it is here you will collect ingredients for your cooking class. Make a range of traditional mouth-watering dishes before indulging in your sumptuous feast. Next stop is Tenganan, home to the Bali Aga people, Bali;s first inhabitants, and the ancient Besakih Temple perched 1000m up on the slopes of Mount Agung.
Day 6: Ubud (B)
A day of cultural sight-seeing including Pura Goa Lawah, the Bat Cave Temple; Kusamba, a traditioanl salt-producer; Klungkung Palace, a wonderful example of balinese architecture; Gunung Kawi, a fascinating Hindu temple complex with ten carved rock shrines and Turta Empul, a reveered temple famous for its holy waters.
Day 7: Ubud & Traditional Healer (B)
Time to explore Ubud, a must-see town for anyone visiting Bali. Enjoy a fascinating class with a local Balinese healer, an expert in using herbs, spices and holistic therapies. Enjoy a light trek through the surrounding area and explore small village communities and an 8th century temple. Finish with spectacular views over the urrounding countryside.
Day 8: Seminyak (B)
Visit Mengwi, a well-maintained former royal temple complex still used for important ceremonies. From here, head to Bedugul, a charming hillside town with some charming local markets to explore. Next stop is Asla Kedaton, the ‘monkey forest’ to see where these cheeky inhabitants roam freely. Your last stop of the day is the magnificent Tanah Lot Temple, built on a rocky outcrop surrounded by water and home to a fresh water spring. The crashing waves, spray and sun create magnificent rainbows and unforgettable pictures.
Day 9 – 15: Days at leisure (B)
Enjoy seven blissful days of leisure to explore the island and make use of the wonderful facilities at your hotel
Day 16: Departure (B)
Enjoy your last few hours on Bali before your guide collects you and takes you to the airport for your return flight home
