Borneo Rainforest Lodge, Danum Valley ****

The Danum Valley, a primary rainforest jungle, is far removed from human habitation. Renowned for its rich variety of both plants and wildlife, Borneo's mammals include such extremely rare and endangered species as the Sumatran rhino, benteng elephant, clouded leopard, Bornean gibbon, and leaf monkey. The orang-utan and proboscis monkey are both only found in Borneo. Bird life is equally extensive and varied with over 275 individual species having been recorded, giving Danum Valley a reputation for being one of the best places for viewing Borneo's wildlife.

The Borneo Rainforest Lodge is a rustic international-standard lodge built beside the Danum River. The lodge accommodates a maximum of 60 people, ensuring each guest a unique and individual jungle experience. The Lodge has been designed by naturalists, built with local materials and located in a magnificent setting beside the Danum River in Sabah's largest protected lowland forest. The accommodation has been designed along the lines of traditional Dusun dwellings linked with the lodge by an attractive walkway. All buildings have been constructed from local products, and power is generated on site. The chalets feature a natural ventilation system, solar heated hot water for showers and hot tubs. Lodge activities include jungle walks, bird watching with resident nature guides, canopy walkways high above the jungle floor that allow the viewing of the rainforest from the treetops and night safaris with sights and sounds emanating deep from within the rainforest.

Comfortable chalets can accommodate two or three people. Each has en-suite bathroom and hot showers. Ceiling fans will keep you cool, while verandahs overlook the beautiful rainforest. You can choose from Standard or Deluxe accommodation, with the deluxe chalets feature a private outdoor tub right on your own private balcony where you can have a relaxing soak after a day of trekking. The central lodge is a large, airy building featuring a spacious verandah, dining area and well-stocked bar.
