Ongava Lodge, Etosha
Ongava Game Reserve, a 70,000 acre private reserve on the southern boundary of Namibia's Etosha National Park, has three camps: Ongava Lodge, Ongava Tented Camp and Little Ongava, each located in a different part of the reserve. Guests can choose the style of accommodation and size of camp that suits them best. The camps are managed independently and each has its own full-time staff, guides, managers and vehicles. All three camps have a similar activity schedule.
Ongava Game Reserve
Ongava Game Reserve forms a buffer between Etosha National Park and the farms to the south. This buffer enables large game such as elephant and lion to move in and out of the Park without entering hostile environments. Most general game has been reintroduced onto the property, including springbok, gemsbok, wildebeest, Burchell's zebra, Hartmann's mountain zebra, waterbuck, red hartebeest, giraffe, eland and the rare black-faced impala.
Activities include game drives in open 4x4 vehicles into the Okaukuejo area of Etosha where lion, elephant (seasonal), gemsbok, springbok, black rhino, greater kudu and red hartebeest can be seen at numerous waterholes and fringing habitats. Apex predators like leopard, cheetah and spotted hyaena also pop up in this area.
In addition, hides and walks with guides are enjoyed on the private reserve. Ongava has resident white and black rhino - one of the few private reserves in southern Africa - allowing guests staying at Ongava the unique opportunity to see both of these charismatic species.
Ongava Main Lodge
Ongava Lodge offers luxury accommodation in 14 en-suite units made of rock and thatch. There are impressive views from the main lounge, bar and dining areas, as they are situated close to the top of a hill, part of the foothills of the unpronounceable Ondundozonanandana Range. There is also an inviting pool to cool off in the heat of the day. Meals are either served in the main dining area under thatch with a view over the camp's waterhole, or on the dining deck under the stars. Ongava Lodge was listed on the Condé Naste Traveller's Gold Reserve List for 2005.
Ongava Tented Camp
Ongava Tented Camp is about 8km away from the main lodge, situated more towards the centre of the game reserve, at the base of the foothills of the Ondundozonanandana Range, meaning "mountain where the boy took the calves". This camp offers you a more rustic, real African experience in the heart of the bush but still in the comfort of luxury tents.
Ongava Tented Camp, built of stone, canvas and thatch, accommodates 16 guests in eight large comfortable Meru-style tents all with en-suite facilities, open air showers and private verandas. The accommodation has recently been refurbished with new luxury tents. There is also a family unit sleeping four. Activities at this comfortable camp typically take place around the main area with its relaxing bar and swimming pool fronting onto a much-frequented waterhole.
As well as the same activities on offer as the Main Lodge, Ongava Tented Camp has additional tours for the more adventurous with a once a month Full Moon trek at night with a tracker, and 1 night camping under the stars in the bush with a tracker.
Little Ongava
Little Ongava is built along a crest of a hill with wonderful views onto the plains below and is the ideal lodge from which to base your activities when visiting Etosha. Little Ongava is a premier-styled camp with only three luxury guest chalets - small and very personalized!
