A 14 Day Namibia Self Drive Safari
Drive this amazing journey yourself on a big loop from Windhoek. Visit Karoo and continue north to the amazing sand dunes of Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert. You will also visit Swakopmund and of course Etosha National Park.
Day 1: Arrive Windhoek
Arrival at Hosea Kutako (Windhoek International) airport, where you will receive your rental vehicle and drive to your lodge. The lodge nestles in natural surroundings, yet is still close to Windhoek.
Driving distance: 30 kilometres
Day 2: Kalahari
Depart the lodge this morning and head towards the Kalahari - the largest continuous stretch of sand on the planet. The landscape is characterised by red sand dunes which reach a height of up to 30 metres and extend over hundreds of kilometres. Reach your accommodation for the evening, your lodge lies in a lush green oasis in the midst of the red Kalahari dunes. (B/D)

Day 3: Karoo
Continue south today towards Fish River Canyon. The Fish River Canyon is seen as the largest canyon in Africa and second largest canyon on earth - after the Grand Canyon in the US. Just as impressive is the period of time during which it was formed: 350 million years ago. (B/D)

Days 4 & 5: Namib Desert
From 1908 diamonds caused a village with grand mansions to sprout from the desert. Today, sand has taken possession of the buildings: the deserted diamond settlement of Kolmanskuppe offers numerous attractive themes for photos. On a guided tour through the 'Ghost Town' you will learn more about everyday life in the settlement and about its rise and fall. Lüderitz The harbour town of Lüderitz on the Atlantic coast boasts a number of magnificent Jugendstil buildings. Visit historical Goerke House and the 'Felsenkirche' (Church on the Rock), go for a stroll through town to the recently completed Waterfront or drive to Diaz Point where Portuguese seafarers erected a massive stone cross more than 500 years ago. Days 6 & 7: Sossusvlei
Sossusvlei is generally regarded as one of the most spectacular landscapes in Namibia. The ‘vlei’ itself is situated at the point where the Tsauchab River dams up at the foot of a spectacular series of sand dunes, its route to the sea blocked. The sand that makes up these massive dunes, amongst the biggest in the world, was carried here by the east winds from central Namibia and owe their distinctive overall colour to the presence of iron oxide, with streaks of black contributed by magnetite. You will spend 2 x nights at a Desert Camp. (B/D)

Days 8 & 9: Swakopmund
Your accommodation in Swakopmund is situated within walking distance of the beach, near the Swakopmund Aquarium and one of the most popular resorts on the coast. Optional activity: 3½ hours catamaran cruise. Take close up pictures of pelican being fed in flight, Cuddle with a seal and enjoy dolphins occasionally jumping up and leaping along the catamaran. Drinks will be served all the time. Before you disembark you will be spoiled with fresh Walvis Bay oysters and sparkling wine as well as a tasty snack platter. (B)

Day 10: Twyfelfontein
On your way to the Etosha National Park, visit the Twyfelfontein area which consists of the Rock paintings, pieces of the Peatrified” forest” and rockformation called orgal pipes, some Welwitschia plants are also to be seen. Welwitschia mirabilis in the Namib Desert of southwestern Africa. The two strap-shaped leaves have been shredded after many decades of thrashing in the desert wind. The leaves arise from a massive woody crown or trunk (caudex) in the center. it only grows in a remote region of southwestern Africa in the Namib and Mossamedes Deserts. Welwitschias are extraordinary plants and certainly rank among the top ten list of "most bizarre plants on earth." (B/D)

Day 11: Okaukuejo
This is the perfect place to view wildlife as there is a fantastic water hole at your accommodation. This is noted as one of the best water holes in Southern Africa. In the daytime, you will always see a lot of wildlife at the waterhole as it is the main source of water in the Okaukuejo area. At night you have a very good chance of seeing black rhinoceros drinking around the waterhole. You also have the opportunity to see the native Himba who live in Kaokoland in the North West of Namibia. (B)

Day 12: Namutoni
Namutoni is located in the eastern side of Etosha National Park. It centers on an old German Fort, overlooking the King Nehale waterhole. The Fort has been developed into the hub of activity, offering two restaurants, a relaxation lounge, a bar, crafts boutique, curio shop, jewellers and bookstore. The Fort area is for pedestrian access only, and an elevated decked walkway along the water-hole facing wall will provide opportunities for enjoying the surrounding scenery, wildlife and the spectacular sunsets. Accommodation is provided in comfortable double rooms. (B)

Day 13: Return to Windhoek
Return to Windhoek today and overnight at the comfortable lodge where you spent your 1st night.

Day 14: Departure
Return to the airport today and drop off your hire car.
