Kulala Camps, Sossusvlei

Kulala Lodge

The Kulala camps are all situated within the arid Namib Desert on the 37,000 ha private Kulala Wilderness Reserve. Nearby world-famous Sossusvlei is an enormous clay pan, flanked by the famous red sand dunes that stand out starkly against the blue sky. These dunes - the most well-known being Big Daddy or Dune 45 - have developed over millions of years, the wind continuously re-fashioning the contours of this red sand sea. The 'vlei' itself only fills after rare heavy rainfall when, in a complete turn-around, it transforms into a spectacular turquoise lake.

Nature drives and walks are also offered on the private reserve with those incredible views, and to catch a glimpse of the denizens of the desert. Another option, at an extra cost, is early morning ballooning, beginning at first light. The balloon safari offers a truly unique experience to soar silently above the magnificent sand dunes and desert, with a champagne breakfast being served at your landing site.

On the edge of the Namib, the oldest desert in the world, wildlife here is fascinating in its adaptation to the harsh conditions. Sparse yet thrilling to see are springbok, gemsbok, ostrich, bat-eared fox, the rarely seen aardwolf and many small fauna. Activities include excursions to the incredible dunes of Sossusvlei, early morning ballooning (at extra cost), guided walks and scenic nature drives.

Kulala Desert Lodge

Kulala Desert Lodge is closest to the iconic red dunes of the Sossusvlei. The camp comprises 15 thatched and canvas "kulalas" ("to sleep" in Oshiwambo) with en-suite bathrooms and verandas. Each unit is built on a wooden platform to catch the cooling breezes and has a deck on the flat rooftop where bedrolls are placed for guests to sleep under the myriad stars that Namibia's clear skies portray.

The main area, with décor inspired by northern Africa, has a lounge, bar, dining area, plunge pool, and wrap-around veranda overlooking the waterhole - a perfect location to view and photograph the desert vista. The overall setting is a true delight to the senses, bringing together the rhythm of Namibia, wholesome meals and intimacy. A waterhole in front of camp attracts a number of local wildlife (such as gemsbok, springbok, ostrich and jackal) and provides a perfect location to view and photograph the desert scenery.

Kulala Wilderness Camp

Kulala Wilderness Camp commands a panoramic view of the valley and mountains beyond. It consists of 10 comfortable "kulalas" with en-suite bathrooms and verandas built on elevated platforms for the spectacular view. The main area is raised to take advantage of the endless vista and comprises a lounge and bar under thatch. Meals are taken on the deck and guests can cool off at the sparkling pool.

Little Kulala

Little Kulala is an acclaimed desert retreat, situated on a large private reserve, bordering the Namib Naukluft Park, in the heart of the Namib. The camp offers magnificent views of the famous red dunes of Sossusvlei, magnificent mountainous scenery and vast open plains.

Eleven climate-controlled, thatched and canvas chalets with en-suite bathrooms and showers are set on wooden platforms to provide maximum airflow. As an option for outdoor enthusiasts, bedrolls can be moved to the rooftop to sleep under the stars from a private star gazing platform.

The main lodge, with décor inspired from North Africa, has a lounge, pub, and dining area and plunge pool, and offers a wrap-around veranda that overlooks the waterhole and provides a perfect location to view and photograph the desert sunset. A rooftop open-air area for dinner under the stars is also part of the experience.
