Lamu Island

The town of Lamu began life as a 14th century Swahili settlement, but the island has seen many visitors and influences, including Portuguese explorers, Turkish traders and the Omani Arabs, all leaving their mark and creating a place of unique culture and traditions. Lamu and the neighbouring islands of Manda and Kiwau not only offer 5-star luxury, but also beautifully decorated old Swahili guest houses and beach front hotels which allow guests to sleep on the beach under an endless blanket of stars.
