Borneo October 2011

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

Meeting David Attenborough, but that wasn't on the itinerary. I can't pick one particular moment out the whole trip was an adventure from start to finish

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?

We received a comprehensive package of advice from Odyssey World that covered just about everything. This was a fast paced holiday and we did not have any shopping excursions so you need to have everything you will need with you. You also need to understand what you are getting yourself into. This felt more like an adventure or expedition than a holiday; but that's what we wanted.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, and minimized impacts on the environment?

I would say yes, In particular the Borneo Rainforest Lodge and Lankayan Island had gone to some trouble to minimise their impact on the environment and the evidence to support this was clearly visible. I have been professionally involved in Environmental matters and I was impressed by what I saw.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?

One of the best that we have ever had, in over 30 years of fairly adventurous travelling. I would give it 5 stars against my own criteria.

Finishing on a high note, it really was an adventure, something that I will remember for the rest of my life.

We had a brilliant time, really enjoyed the whole trip.We were very well looked after by your team, there was someone waiting at the airport with our driver, and then another rep came to our hotel to welcome us. There was a contact at Petra who was also very friendly and at the end of the trip someone was waiting again at the airport to help us depart...faultless service.

Our driver, Maurid, was lovely and could not have been more helpful. He even bought us some grapes to eat from his own garden! He found us guides when we got to sites, helped us with our luggage and was very patient when my mother made us late (she gets a bit breathless and needed to slow down sometimes). He found us restaurants and supermarkets when we wanted them and gave us a good insight into the daily life in Jordan.

Our guides at all the sites were excellent, all very knowledgable and passionate about the history of their glorious country, we were very impressed.

The hotels were all great, no complaints there. The only negative thing I can think of for the whole trip was the lack of food for vegetarians! (outside Odysseys control I guess!) Luckily I love hummous and flat bread so I managed!

Thanks Stef, it was a great trip & I'll be sure to recommend it to anyone who seems interested in going themselves.

It was fantastic!! We saw loads of orang-utans and were lucky enough to see some wild ones when we visited the gomatong caves. We also saw baby turtles before sunset on Selingan Island because a nest had been made under one of the main buildings which the rangers didn't know about! We were photographing the sunset when we heard people shouting and saw dozens of hatchlings running into the sea. The hotels were all good and even the most basic accommodation was still very satisfactory.

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?

There are so many truly memorable parts it is difficult to pick one; Lankayan island is a true paradise and we will never forget snorkelling from the beach with baby black tip reef sharks and then a green turtle, as well as beautiful coral gardens and tropical fish - including nemo. The sighting of 20 pygmy elephants at Tabin, as well as wild orang-utans, gibbons swinging through the trees above us while we swam in the natural pools and seeing lots of other wonderful wildlife will stay with us forever. Sepilok also memorable.

2. How would you rate your holiday overall?

Absolutely wonderful, with a range of habitats, wildlife and activities. A very well organised holiday that exceeded our expectations and accommodated all our special requests. Very easy holiday for families, with some easy trekking. A magical holiday.

I am totally speechless!!!!!! What an incredible Holiday, you were truly amazing and I cannot begin to thankyou enough. Services were impeccable, everyone was friendly and hospitality was like none I have ever experienced before.

Tanjung Aru was incredible and for me a nicer setting hotel than the shangri la.
Danum valley was incredible, as was abai jungle lodge.
All in all it was a dream come true and none of it would have been possible without your expert advice and continuous support.

I will have no hesitancy in using you again in the future and will also be recommending you to friends and family.

Chris and I would just like to say what a wonderful time we had in Borneo. We absolutely loved the country and the variety of places we visited. We just wanted to say thank you very much for all the organising you did at this end which resulted in the whole trip running very smoothly and without any problems. The hotels and lodges were great and we were particularly impressed with the knowledge and helpfulness of the local guides and rangers. Thanks for all your efforts.

Overall, it was an amazing trip. A great balance between seeing and doing and then relaxing at the end. Only thing we didn’t see were the elephants, but saw so much else that it didn’t matter.

Danum Valley was really beautiful and really exceptional quality, as were the Shangri La hotels (obviously). Abai and Sepilok were both very good. I think our least favourite accommodation were Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge and Turtle Island, which we thought were basic, though obviously the attraction of river cruises and turtle egg laying are the reason to be there rather than the quality of the rooms.

The guys on the ground were generally very good. The quality of service we received throughout the trip was better than anything we’ve received elsewhere.
